Eat This at lunch if You Want to Feel Full for Longer!

If you are like most people, you love to eat! In fact, many people say eating is their favorite thing to do. Nothing is worse than trying to lose a few pounds and feeling hunger pangs. Well, there is a certain kind of food that is not only good for you but also helps you feel full for several hours. This is wonderful because it also puts great nutrients into your body and will keep you away from snacking on fattening and unhealthy junk food.

What is this food? It’s the avocado! New research shows that eating half an avocado at lunch helped overweight adults feel full for longer in the hours after lunch and before dinner. Dr. Joan Sabate, a Professor of Nutrition at Loma Linda University School of Public Health, writes, “Avocados are a very popular and delicious fruit, and from the results of our study, may also be helpful for people who are looking to better manage their weight.”

In the study, the group who ate half an avocado with their lunch was 40 percent less likely to want to eat again over the three hours following lunch and 28 percent less likely to want to eat again over the five hours following lunch compared with the group who did not have any avocado in their lunch. The downside to this study is that it was only done with 26 people, so the results may not hold true for the population as a whole. But, who cares? Avocados are great for you so give it a try and see how it works for you!

For many people, the New Year is about making resolutions, but it can be discouraging when you don’t get very far with them. If you’re tired of making goals and not sticking to them, reconsider how you are going about it this year. Planning ahead and being firm on your decisions is only the beginning of following through on your New Year’s resolutions.

  1. Be realistic. Start by coming up with realistic goals and 2014 New Year’s resolutions. Making a pledge to lose 50 pounds in three months may not be realistic, and may make you feel like you failed when you don’t lose those pounds. Instead, make a goal to increase your water intake, eat more fruits and vegetables, walk three times a week, or cut back on an unhealthy habit, like drinking soda.
  2. Start right away. Beginning in January, make a list of what you hope to achieve in 2014. But instead of just listing these resolutions, include ways you plan to make them happen. Put your action plan in motion right at the beginning of the year so you don’t have anything holding you back. Starting slow and steady helps you stick to your resolutions past the first week of January.
  3. Avoid doing too much. Multi-tasking is a good skill to learn as it helps you accomplish more, even with minimal time and resources. But there comes a point when you are attempting to do too much. If you’re trying to do too many things, you may get overwhelmed, experience stress, and then just stop altogether out of frustration. It’s important to be realistic with what you hope to achieve. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and support when you need it.
  4. Improve physical health. If your physical health is one of your most important 2014 New Year’s resolutions, consider ways of improving it. Getting chiropractic care regularly can help you rebalance your body’s nervous system, improving just about every part of your body. This is a great start and basis for improving your overall physical health and wellbeing.
  5. Pamper yourself. Reward yourself for sticking to your resolutions by pampering yourself, whether it is a day of shopping or hour long therapeutic massage. These small things you do for yourself have a large impact in your confidence, self-esteem, and energy. This, in turn, further helps you reach your goals.

Relief for those Holiday Headaches

Tension Headaches are very common as we enter the Holiday Season. It seems we often try to do more than we should to try to please everyone, which can cause muscle tension and pain.

Here are a few simple things you can do to both prevent stress headaches from happening and to get rid of them if they do happen:

  1. Use a firm cervical pillow, which will help the neck muscles to rest and recover when you sleep. Soft pillows can often cause the muscles to work harder when you sleep which can sometimes contribute to tension headaches.
  2. Buy an ice gel pack from your local drug store and keep it in the freezer. When you feel like you are stressed out you can ice the neck muscles for 10-15 minutes to reduce the muscle spasms and prevent a headache from coming on. You can also ice after you get a headache. Make sure to use a paper towel between the ice pack and your skin to prevent ice burn.
  3. Roll a hand towel into a roll and put it under your neck. Lie on it whenever you feel stress related muscle tension or a headache coming on. Do this for 5-10 minutes several times per day.
  4. Take a Walk. Not only is Walking good physical exercise, but it may be the necessary mental and neurological respite you may need.
  5. Visit your Chiropractor if you do all of the above and the headaches persist. Your spine may have shifted outside of its proper position. A Chiropractor can gently position it back in place for you, relieving the pressure off those delicate headache nerves.

What can you do?

Protective Chiropractic would like to offer the following tips to help prevent the needless pain that an over-stuffed backpack may cause the student in your household… And now that backpacks have begun to replace briefcases in the work place, you too might want to follow this advice:

  • Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 15 percent of his or her body weight. The backpack will cause your child to begin bending forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back rather than on the shoulders, by the straps.
  • A backpack with individualized compartments will help you position the contents most effectively and ensure that your child’s sandwich isn’t flattened by a heavy textbook.
  • When packing the backpack, make sure that pointy or bulky objects are packed away from the area that will rest on the child’s back. An uneven surface rubbing against your child’s back could cause painful blisters.
  • Tell your child to use both shoulder straps, not just one. A backpack slung over one shoulder disproportionately shifts all of the weight to one side, and can cause not only neck and muscle spasms, but also low back pain.
  • Padded shoulder straps are very important. Not only will they be more comfortable than non-padded straps, but they will also help prevent the straps from digging into your child’s shoulders.
  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable, so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. Shoulder straps that are too loose can cause the backpack to dangle uncomfortably, and cause misalignment and pain.
  • If the backpack is still too heavy, talk with your child’s teacher. It might be possible to leave the heaviest books at school, and bring home only lighter handout materials or workbooks.
  • Talk to your child about the proper use of backpacks and help him or her to understand its importance. A child who is educated early in life on these issues can apply this knowledge later in life and as a result, your child will be happier and healthier. Protecting your Spine…
